This week we went on an educational visit to London Project Design (Mr Bill’s workplace) to inquire about the material ‘wood’ and to see how the properties of wood can be changed by machines. The students were able to see how the wood as it was when it came into the workshop and before it was changed into something else. They saw how today in the modern world, machinery can do the complex cutting as well as simple tasks such as sanding. The students were able to try their hand at using a screw driver, hammer and manually sanded their own personalised wooden gift from Mr. Bill. The students inquired into why fat shapes are called 3D. There were many suggestions. Please ask your child what they said. To make connections between 2D and 3D shapes they have become aware that there are, for example, a circle on a cylinder and a triangle on a pyramid. We also had an assessment about naming the strokes of characters. Most of the students were able to tell the correct names of strokes and write them down in frames. This week students sorted materials into different groups such as wood, metal, cloth, glass, plastic, paper, fabric. We investigated the properties of the materials and later revised what selected materials were made from. We will also be mixing different soluble materials together and observing their reactions. This week the students were immersed in Language learning as we celebrated Literacy Week throughout the school. It was wonderful to see the students reading more than usual and also engaging in listening to parents reading in the outside area. In class we learned about two poems, ‘The Rabbit’ and ‘Hua’. In ‘The Rabbit’ we looked at the rhyming words and tried to understand what the poem told us. The students were split into four groups where they talked about their understanding of the poem. They were ask to write or draw their ideas and then transfer that understanding onto a paper plate. Grade 1s were also given the opportunity to attend a Drama workshop which was so much fun and a very effective learning time. The students learned how to use their piece of cloth to represent different characters, to use their English to make a story involving their chosen characters. I am pleased to say all students eventually engaged and there was a lot laughter as they reacted and responded to the workshop leader. The photos that the students took last week also provided them with the experience of writing captions informing the viewer what their photograph is saying. At this time the students are using their phonic knowledge, their grammar which includes capital letters for the beginning of a sentence and proper nouns such days of the week, names of people and places, full stops and commas. Students are making their own multiplication sentences and using the voice box to record their answer. We have introduced standard units of measurement - millimetres (mm) and centimetres (cm) and started some hands on learning experiences. We looked at the data we collected across the school and concluded that rewards happened in every class. In K1 and K2 stickers were a cherished reward. In K1B the teachers made a book with a teddy that is rewarded to a child each week to take home. Parents help their child to record the weekend events of the teddy which is wherever activities the child does. As a reward for the students' excellent performance, we took the students for Foot Golf at Belgravia during their PE session on Tuesday. They had a lovely time and learned a new game and additional skills. 作为孩子们圆满完成圣诞表演的奖励,星期二我们带着他们去球会比佩亚小区去上了一次特别的户外体育课——体验足球高尔夫。他们在草坪上奔跑,踢球,竞赛,挥汗,大家一起上了一节十分有收获的体育课,学习了新的技能。 Having reaped their reward which was a throughly enjoyable learning experience, we showed the students the photographs we took of the trip. This helped them to reflect on their lesson. It also prompted the suggestion to have a photography competition and so the students have been out taking photographs. Once the photo is taken, they then had to have a go at writing a caption for it. This is still a work in progress, however, here are some of their photographs. The class will choose the winning photograph. Students were shown some real pictures taken in China several decades ago. They worked in groups to discuss what they understood from the pictures and how the photos make them feel. They then took turns to share it with the rest of the class. We found out that one of the reasons many people suffered from hunger at that time was because there were no reward systems in place. Many people lost the motivation to work the land and became hungry. This week we continued to work on the relationship between addition and multiplication. The students also used the data they collected to see if rewards across the school were similar or different. They said that although they felt nervous on stage, they also felt proud and very happy at end of the performance. The students loved how parents were cheering and clapping loudly. This week part of our Language program focussed on writing. This included leaving spaces between words and joining sentences using the word ‘and’. This introduction has been a little challenging but we will continue to practice this overtime as we write. Next week, we will spend some time practicing writing Chinese characters. We will also discuss about reading strategies to get ready for the Chinese guided reading after the holiday. 这周的中文时间里,我们开始了拼音的阶段性个人评估,还学习了三个新的复韵母。下周,我们会练习汉字书写,还会讨论一些有效的阅读策略,因为这将是我们放假回来后中文指导阅读的核心关注内容。 We are also inquiring into the use of money using addition and subtraction. Please send in any boxes or other containers we can use in our shop. So far we have priced some items but have not yet had the shopping experience we had hoped. Through the students interaction with money they have been identifying odd and even numbers. Additionally we have been introducing the concept of time to help students manage their eating time better. To further inquire into rewards we made small groups of students and visited various classrooms throughout the school. This week we have been focussing on the introductions of money and how we use it. On Tuesday we looked at this book together so that we would have an understanding of the setting of the story and who the characters were. We also tried to understand what was happening from the pictures. On Thursday the students listened to the story and collectively showed their understanding of the story by answering questions. In preparation for real life experiences, the students will be setting up a shop in our class. After discussions about the students ideas with Principal Anna, she suggested we could take the students bowling as it would be a real life and meaningful experience.

This week we have been encouraging children to present information to their peers. The students have been learning how to speak with just a couple of guidelines, such as, look at your friends and try and speak clearly and loudly. As they become more confident speakers, we will add to the criteria of our expectations, but for now we want to give them as many experiences as possible to speak to the group. There were six children who ran for office: Rani, Alex, Dennis, Angela, Henry and Kevin. This week they have been speaking to their peers about why they should vote for them. This morning they presented their speeches and the children voted. We also reminded the students about the great job the outgoing leaders did and how much we, as teachers, really appreciated it. They were great ambassadors for our class and their Leadership will be remembered within the school. In the afternoon the votes were counted and the new Class Leaders were announced. Congratulations to Rani and Kevin! The outgoing leaders Owen and Melody gave a speech of thanks to their class and said well done to Rani and Kevin. 今天另外一件重大的事情,选举产生了新班长。这一次一共有六名同学参加了竞选,分别是乐尼、邓修言、邓竣谦、赵泠羽、刘子恒和张楷汶。上午,他们分别来到教室前面做竞选演讲,然后大家依次投票。下午经过计票后,新的班长产生了。对于出色的完成了自己任务的两位第一任班长,全体老师和同学们都非常感谢他们。这两位班长给大家发表了卸任的感想,同时也感谢大家的支持。 We have had many experiences with using 3D shapes this week. The students built different structures and did their best to collaborate. This was very challenging for them but they got there in the end and did a great job. They then had to judge which structure was the best and say why. The best structure won the prize of an extra ten minutes play. The idea behind the activity was building with spacial thinking. Spatial intelligence is a mode of thought we use to imagine different visual perspectives. Are these two shapes different? Or are they identical and merely oriented differently? It is crucial for many tasks and so it is important to give children as many experiences as possible to develop their spatial intelligence. We continued with Shared and Guided reading. 通过分享写作活动,学生们尝试构建已学和未学的单词。同时,常规的分享和指导阅读活动也按部就班地进行着。 Chinese 中文 This week we put a heavy focus on Chinese literacy and did fun creative activities about poetry. We compared and contrasted the two poems about wind and summarized the characteristics of each poem. The children then worked in groups to imagine how to feel wind using our five senses. We even went out for a walk around the school to observe and hear the wind.
