Monday was a great day of fun with our Halloween celebrations. The students loved coming into an already decorated class. Thank you parents. As part of the Halloween celebrations we inquired into how this is celebrated in other parts of the world. We looked at small videos of Japan, America and England. Please ask your child about it. The students also went on a Trick or Treat walk throughout the school and collected some sweeties along the way. For the rest of the week our Inquiry Unit allowed us to include Halloween activities such as exploring the inside of a large pumpkin. The students were very keen to separate the seeds and put them out to dry in the hope of planting them. The students are more confident as they work their way towards more challenging reading books. During guided reading they are keen to show that their knowledge of phonics as they sound out letters and segment words. 在本周的语音部分,我们一起复习了不规则单词said和so,练习了高频单词的拼读、拼写,以及句子写作。在英语阅读方面,同学们慢慢可以自信地阅读具有挑战性的书籍,尤其是小组指导阅读时,他们开始热衷于展示怎么用已有的知识来进行拼读和分解单词。 Chinese This week we tried a special group activity. Students were divided into five groups. In each group, there is a recorder, who is responsible to take records of the group members’ ideas, and a speaker, who is responsible to present the group idea to other students. All the group members are thinkers, as they all need to contribute to the discussion and group work. In this way, each group worked collaboratively to describe one object using their five senses. 中文 这周我们进行了一项特别的小组活动。学生们分成五个小组,每个小组有一名记录者,负责记录小组各成员的想法,和一名发言者,负责代表小组向大家展示小组成果;小组的每一个成员都是思考者,因为每一个人都要参与和贡献。通过这样的合作方式,每一个小组都尝试了用五种感觉来描述一个物品。 Maths In Maths the students were introduced to single digit vertical addition and other students shared their knowledge by having a go at two digit numbers. During this learning, the students drew on their knowledge of Place Value. In Phonics this week the students reinforce their sounds based around ai ee igh oa oo. They had a go at making words using relevant strategies. We are pleased to say the students are applying these skills in their independent writing and becoming more confident. Along side of this they are also attempting small worksheets to encourage sentence structure. This worksheet is about putting in the missing word and reading the sentence. This means that when they are speaking and writing this will help them to structure sentences correctly. This will be an ongoing activity throughout the year as the sentences become more complex. 这一周我们巩固练习了字母发音ai, ee, igh, ao和oo。我们非常欣慰地看到,同学们不仅能用语音知识和技能来组词,在写作上也渐渐变得越来越独立和自信。除此以外,我们还提供了工作纸给大家,通过选词填空的方式,将完整的句子写并拼读出来。这样的练习不仅同时训练了写和说的能力,也会帮助孩子们熟悉英语句子的结构。类似的练习会贯穿整一年的学习,但句子的复杂程度会慢慢提高。 The book we read this week for shared reading was Silly Sally. This a rhyming story about Sally walking upside down. We looked at the patterns in the story particularly the rhyming words. The students painted parts of the story and were able to write about what their painting said. 在英语的分享阅读环节,我们一起读了有趣的《Silly Sally》。这是一个关于女孩Sally倒着走的故事,里面的语句大多都有押韵。因此我们把注意力放在了找出句子规律尤其是押韵词上。在读完以后,同学们把自己印象最深的情节画在了白纸上,并用一句话来描述自己的画作。 We learnt new Pinyin initials j, q, and x and practiced syllables combining with these three initials and single finals. In literacy, we shifted from modern children’s poems to another style of poetry and introduced a Chinese ancient poem “风”. At the beginning of the week we were given some bananas by Head of School, Teacher Anna and were asked to include it in our lessons. We decided to use these bananas in our planned poetry lessons. We introduce the students to Shape Poems. We look at the bananas, smelt and felt them, then made a poem together. Students have been having a go at writing sentences independently and we have displayed their efforts in the classroom. This week we have worked progressively through our Inquiry Unit. The students have continued to drive the unit 'Imagination' by utilising the definition "Imagination is letting your brain play" (Daisy Wang, Gr. 1). Students listened to different pieces of music and responded in many different ways. They observed how music makes us feel and how it can change our emotions. This week for Mathematics our lessons consisted of numbers, numbers and more numbers and that is because when children count, they basically learn numbers as a kind of "continuum" that goes on and on. However, with simple counting your child might not catch on to the permanent structure of our number system, and how it is built with groups of tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on and so this week we worked with numbers in different ways, including digging deeper into place value. For children to understand place value, they needed to first be able to name small numbers, do simple additions and subtractions with small numbers, and understand about groups in counting (or skip-counting). Subitising is an unfamiliar word and you may not have heard it before , however this is a visual learning concept that will aid the students in their understanding of number sense. It will help them to use pattern recognition to discover essential properties of numbers, such as conservation and compensation. They further used their phonics through activities such as shared writing and Guided Reading using blending and segmenting. Thank you parents for your help at home with hearing your child read and encouraging them to use these tools when they are reading. 英语语音 Chinese Pinyin: 汉语拼音 This week we learnt four new initials, namely d, t, n, and l. We practised sounding out the syllables composed with these four initials and six single finals. We also learnt interesting tongue twisters. They are: “吃葡萄不吐葡萄皮儿,不吃葡萄倒吐葡萄皮儿”, and “补破皮褥子不如不补破皮褥子”. The students looked to artists such as Chagall, Van Gogh and Qi Baishi to inspire them. The students have been involved in discussions about their favour artist, saying why they like his work. 亲子活动建议 Math: Play games with your child to reinforce number sense. Count everything! Count toys, kitchen utensils and items of clothing as they come out of the dryer. Help your child count by pointing to and moving the objects as you say each number out loud. Count forward and backwards from different starting places. Use household items to practice adding, subtracting. Reading: Read together with your child and discuss about their favorite books or stories. When we come back to school, we will launch a story-telling activity in Chinese. Everyone will have a chance to stand in the front and share his/her favorite story Pinyin: Use Pinyin flashcards to practise blending and sounding out initials and single finals. Ask children to write their names and family’s names in Pinyin and sound out. You can use anything to play a Pinyin guessing game with your child. For example, you can ask your child, “What is the initials for mǎlù? Finals? Accomplishing the correct letter formation is important to time management throughout their school career. They continue with guided reading in English individually. When writing the students are beginning to remember that a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. During shared writing the students are participating by either telling the teacher how to sound out the word or by writing it. To add to their vocabulary the teachers have implemented word puzzles where the students are matching words to the pictures. They have experiences in oral blending and segmenting when we approach Shared Reading via the morning message and when they are participating in Guided Reading. As the same as last term, we will be sending home a Chinese picture book with pinyin once a week. There will be an owl reading record book for every student. These number focuses were broken into number facts, where student explored how many ways they can make numbers up to 10. Students imagined what they would like on their moon and discussed it with the class. As you can see from the photos, they were very imaginative. We have also connected the Line of Inquiry led by the students earlier connection to the unit. The candidates who were running for the office of Class Leader, prepared speeches and delivered it to their peers confidently. All children voted, then votes were counted.
